Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine most commonly in a “C” or “S” shape that can be congenital (present at birth) or may also develop in earlier developmental stages of life. The condition may worsen as the body continues to develop but usually plateaus in the adult years. Also, these abnormal curvatures can be brought on later in life by trauma or pre-existing degenerative diseases that shift the alignment of the vertebrae.
Besides discomfort and limited range of motion, scoliosis does not normally cause symptoms of severe pain but rather shows physical symptoms that can be easier spotted by friends or family members. This is often displayed by a protruding shoulder blade, horizontally uneven shoulders or hips, or a clear lateral curvature when observing the spine from the back.
There are three types of curvatures of the spine; Scoliosis, Kyphosis and Lordosis. Scoliosis refers to an abnormal lateral curve (from side to side) where anything greater than a 60-degree curve requires intricate medical attention. Kyphosis and lordosis differ from scoliosis because they are naturally existing posterior and anterior curves that can sometimes be exaggerated causing conditions as a hunch back or sway back.
Through the tutelage and expertise of our Physiotherapists,Athletic Therapists and Chiropractors, Synergy Rehab & Physiotherapy Centre will provide sufferers with the means to relieve symptoms of these conditions through assisted stretches and strengthening exercises. The supporting muscles and tendons become shifted due to the exaggerated curvature, thus we focus on strengthening this support system through massage therapy to promote muscle balance and decompression of the nerve roots between vertebral discs.
