Sprains and strains are very common injuries that share similar signs and symptoms but encompass different elements of the body’s musculoskeletal structure. Often confused, a sprain is the stretching or tearing of a ligament (tissue connecting bone to bone) whereas a strain is an injury of a muscle or tendon.
A sprain is caused by either direct or indirect trauma of a joint. Twisting the ankle or bracing a fall with a fully extended arm may cause the joint to shift out of place thus stretching or tearing the thick fibrous band. Ligaments act as the structural stabilizers for the body’s skeleton to control mobility of the joints. It is very difficult to stretch or tear them with low-impact activity making this injury extremely common amongst athletes.
Sprains cause pain, inflammation and bruising and leave a joint loose, weak and potentially non-functional.
1. Initially, the clinicians at Synergy Rehab & Physiotherapy Centre will implement ice therapy in order to reduce any swelling and inflammation, along with recommending ample rest of the injured area.
2. Ultrasound and IFC (Interferential Current) treatments are performed with the purpose of decreasing any muscle spasm as well as to increase blood flow to the affected area.
3. When appropriate, physiotherapy is introduced with soft and deep tissue treatments are used to break down any existing scar tissue and facilitate proper tissue orientation.
4. Stretching and strengthening exercises are prescribed individually to re-gain strength and stability for mobilization.
